Developers spend so much time and resources on creating games that play like big Hollywood productions and, in Uncharted's case, even market them as such. This comes at the cost of longer lead times and larger financial stakes, that these companies have to offset in one way or another (just look at what's going on with the Final Fantasy franchise at the moment). And for what? Games can be touching, artistic, entertaining, or all of the above, without achieving pixel perfection or having stuff constantly crumble apart and explode in your face. It just requires a game to push the right buttons, instead of pushing them all (a perfect example of a title that nails this is ICO). I really hope we won't arrive in a future where 8 out of 10 games are more show than tell. No intent to rain on anyone's parade, of course. It's just my opinion that, underneath all the cinematic makeup, Uncharted plays like a dime-a-dozen shooter adventure.

You're putting down on Uncharted for being the best at what it does? You say it markets itself as a Hollywood production style game... What's wrong with that? They have no shame in admitting it, so why should it be held at a crutch to it? Perhaps that isn't for everyone, but I don't think that makes it a problem for the gaming industry, because I really don't believe we have an over-saturation of them. With the rise of indie gaming via services like Steam, the gaming sphere has slowly been populated with more and more of a variety of games... I think it's extremely cynical to assume that gaming is all tending towards one style.

May I just note that some people find ICO slow and really boring? Tongue That doesn't mean that games like it shouldn't be made in favour of what those people want instead. Tongue

Different strokes for different folks, but I don't think Uncharted is a problem in the way which you've described.

Dead Space: I love the series to death. Specially Dead Space 2, it's definitely one of the best FPS that I've ever played. The storyline was interesting, in my opinion, and all the different places you had to go to were all really well done and added to the creepy mood of the story. Not to mention having to run around with no health and no money for half of the game is always fun.

Kingdom Hearts: because it's one of the few series were I love every character in the game. I really like how the story intertwines FF and Disney characters, and all the different keyblades and worlds never fail to amuse me.

Final Fantasy: All of the games that I've played from this series have made me love it's characters and different storylines. I love how colorful the games are, and I've always liked the battle system.

Super Mario: it's-a Mario.

Sonic: Just because the first game I remember playing is Sonic Adventure 2. I miss my chaos.

Hm...I continue to think that I've place my list here...Guess not...

1. Ace Combat - As usually, I'll probably be alone in this, but that's because I love flying and the story-line that comes with it. A player has the most amount of jets to command compared to any other series and all the planes are detailed very nicely and accurately. Not to mention, it takes realism and downplays it for some good ol' actiony fun...XD

2. Valkyria Chronicles - While not fitting the "5 game" requirement, it's tied for my favorite with Ace Combat because of the art style the game is in and the story-line...Not to mention the excellent gameplay. I'm not a huge fan of shooters (though I generally gravitate toward TPS), but the way that Valkyria Chronicles play makes it fun and easy for anyone to get into. Not to mention, the story (at least for the first one) draws you in and you want to know how the story ends...

3. Pokemon - Do I really need to say any more? It's one series that generally anyone from any age group can get into. Who doesn't want to catch them all?...XD

4. Star Wars: Battlefront - I'm only consider the console games here. Here's a game that had expansive maps and lots of vehicles...which I love. There were just so much choices in who you could be and what you could do. It was just so fun...Only problem I had with it was that there wasn't much story to it, but that just can't stop me from slaughtering the enemy...XD

5. Metroid - Exploration, monsters, big laser guns, and a hot chick in armor...What more can a guy ask for?...XD

In no particular order:

Uncharted: IT'S JUST AWESOME! Probably my favourite game franchise ever. The gameplay, the stories, the characters and the dialogue are all really, really good. I love everything about the games. Even if I do get really annoyed at it sometimes, and I can't wait to get UC: Golden Abyss for PSV, which hopefully I'll get not long after it's release.

Metal Gear Solid: I haven't actually played all of the MGS's, but of what I've played, it's awesome. Plus, the franchises handheld games are really good as well. I also enjoyed playing online.

Little Big Planet: I know this isn't the biggest of franchises, but I really like it. I don't own LBP 2, but I've been on my friends and it's just a great game to play with your mates. I'll admit it can get a little boring when you're playing by yourself, but overall, I think it's a great franchise.

Mass Effect: Like others here, I only own a PS3, so I have never played the first one (I think you can get ME1 for CPU as well, but I didn't), but the second one was great. I like the characters and how you can learn more about the ones you want to learn more about by doing their 'Loyalty Missions' throughout the story.

Final Fantasy: Although I may not be in to FF as much as some people here are, I still enjoy playing the few FF games I have. I don't really have a favourite, mainly because I haven't played nearly enough of them to fully know which is my favourite, but as I've said, I do enjoy playing them.

"All men dream: but not equally. Those who dream by night in the dusty recesses of their minds wake in the day to find that it was vanity: but the dreamers of the day are dangerous men, for they may act their dream with open eyes, to make it possible. This I did." - T.E Lawrence

Ok, in no particular order here are mine ::

1. Assassin's Creed - ever since the trailer of the first game was released, i've been hoooooooked. I love the fast paced free running, the story, the characters, everything. Even the time periods have been incredible and highly educational as well. I think AC brings a lot of culture into the gaming world but in a really really neat way and I really really dig it.

2. Batman Arkham Series - If you know me, you know I'm a massive Batman fan. Even considered getting the batsymbol tattooed to my shoulder once. But yea, I may have a bit of bias there since I feel Batman has some of the strongest written villains in any of the mainstream comics.. but oh well. It's a Batman game that works and I hope more of these will come out.. and that perhaps I could play as Talia?... maybe?

3. Prince of Persia: Sands of Time - This series, for me, ended with The Two Thrones. Anything beyond that is not my Sands. Prince of Persia is one of the only franchises I've ever been full invested in buying each game and playing through them numberous times. I love the puzzles, the Prince.. everything. The movie completely butchered the game, so don't use that or the freaking Forgotten Sands as any sort of reference for the rest of the series.

4. Legos - Call me a bit odd, but each one of the legos games I've played has been really fun. Whether ir's HP, SW, and so on, I could play these games forever and not get bored. Plus with friends they make some awesome memories.

5. Sonic - You can crack jokes about how bad recent Sonic titles have been, but alas, the first three Sonic games were BEAST. My friend Carissa and I used to play Sonic the Hedgehog 2 to death when we were kids and even now, I could pick up a Sonic game and have a blast... 3D blast Wink

In any case, those are my choices. Smile

Metal Gear Solid - Easily the most epic plot and characters ever to grace the industry imo. The plot spans decades and so do the games. I'm a lore guy and that's probably a funny term to associate with MG, but it's the most fitting. Gameplay impoves/expands with each game, each and every character is essential to the plot, and just the history each character has with each other is mind-boggling.

Disgaea - Fun, over-the-top, and absolutely hilarious. One of the best strategy RPGs I've ever played and there's just hundreds of hours I can invest into it. The replay value is phenomenal, the characters are fun and the gameplay super addicting.

Mass Effect - There aren't five games, but when you consider its predecessor was Knights of the Old Republic or whatever other RPG developed by BioWare, and that it's just such a big experience, it's hard not to include this. Easily one of the most engaging franchises I've played this generation.

Battlefield - Played 1942 a looong time ago, loved the huge maps. Then played Battlefield 2 with my friends in the army, nothing describes camaraderie like sitting in a LAN shop with people you train, work and live with. Enjoyed Bad Company 2's multiplayer and then of course there's Battlefield 3 which I'm loving right now.

Resistance - RfoM, R2, R3, RR, The Gathering Storm, A Hole in the Sky and now Burning Skies for the Vita, if there's any other game I enjoy for its backstory and continuity, it's the Resistance franchise. Great plot, characters and just fun, challenging shooting.

Heres my top five.. (Alot of the same ones many people have already mentioned)

Mario - My life was never the same after playing my first Mario game on NES. I can still play it and find it challenging and fun. Favorite of the Franchise: Super Mario World (SNES).

Final Fantasy - Love a good escape, and this series always comes through with epic stories, music, characters... just everything = a win. Hours of fun and replay value, as you will want to relive the story over and over with each game. Favoirte of the Franchise: Final Fantasy VI (SNES).

NBA 2K - Ok, maybe I'm alone on this one, but this franchise has saved Basketball games. Before we had 2k, the choices for a legit Basketball experience were slim. NBA Live was decent, but the game play was choppy and stiff. 2k is realistic, smart, and fun. My favorite is probably 2k9, Its the one I spent the most time on.

War/Starcraft - Offers the best realtime strategy games on the planet. Addictive as crack (not that I know first hand...), point-click- build, grow, destroy, conquer. Favorite is a tie between the orginal Starcraft and Warcraft 3.

Call of Duty - When it comes to fps, theres a lot to choose from... As a youngster I'd played several on PC (Doom, Heritic, Hexen, Wolfienstein, Quake), all were fun in their own right, but when I began playing fps on console, the game series that offers the most realitic element and touches the warrior string in me, is COD. Favorite is COD: MW2 ...

I look at this list and I'm like ... damn.. mad diversity
