Hah, after listening to you all, I'm beginning to hate this E3. Great episode anyways, loved hearing the experiences even when I couldn't go.
As I said elsewhere, it's kind of sad to hear people upset when there's little announcements that weren't leaked or released early. When this stuff is leaked, it's not as if they are going to just call it off, or make up something on the fly to show. They are going to just continue their plans because not everyone is as up to date as others. While in the case of early released information, I think it just goes to show how much we nag for content.
While we complain when companies keep us in the dark, we also get bored when we are fed too much. It's a vicious cycle. When I go into events like E3, I'm not expecting new, but rather more. I know UC3 is coming, so I don't expect "Oh wow, a new Uncharted!" I expect "ooo more stuff!"
I agreed with the comments about them needing to get the focus back on the games and less on the gimmicks, gadgets and doodads (3D/Motion/etc). I admit this year I just skipped most of the Sony/MS/Nintendo conferences when they went into all that junk. I miss the days of popping on E3 and seeing gameplay and CGs. I guess they push that stuff because it's pure profit for them..
The smartphone gaming versus handheld console idea is a common subject I ponder. In my opinion the real gamers still play their handhelds but I think most of the old casual handheld gamers are dropping them for the games on their smartphones. It's just so much more convenient to use their phone they already carry rather than invest in another pocketfull and price tag. However anyone I know that used to seriously game on their Gameboys, NeoGeos, GameGears, etc; still go for a real handheld console be it PSP or DS. Sony is smart in adapting to cater to the new touch based gaming caused by the new smartphones (incoming Angry Birds PSV).
In response to the naming of PSVita, I think it's only natural. They couldn't do PSP2 because they probably wanted to separate this release from the lack of success the PSP had. They couldn't do NGP because when the next version came out, the name would be quite silly. Also, side note: The reason I think WiiU caught on so quickly is because people enjoyed making fun of it
Okay, I posted too much, but really wanted to respond to some comments. Love the show!
